‘Monico Lucerno’ by Ray Cates (Adolphus)

So I’m the youngest girl in the family, so Sam and father agree that it will be safest if I deliver the note.  Of course I didn’t like it, we didn’t even know the name of the merchant.

He just set up shop on the sidewalk, in front of our store.  There is no law to the contrary, so he has every right to sell there.  He seems stronger than any two of my brothers.  Oh what a good-looking man, of course everybody else hates him.  Sam finally killed the other merchant, and of course he’s been like a hero ever since.  I’ve always thought when you kill one of them there is a likelihood that they will kill one of us.

I watched that man outside our windows, that was the first day he  was there.  His muscles just ripple.  He’s a very powerful man.  He was so decisive with his slave women, none of them protested when he pulled or pushed them around.  It was art the way he gestured and talked to customers.  Something electric about him or maybe it’s that I’m twenty and still a virgin.  My brothers want to use me to combine Excel Jewelery as part of our family.

Who knows if Mr. Excel really wants a young third wife?  He looks fat and without a bit of energy.  I told my older brother Ken that “Maybe you should arrange the marriage before they start constructing Mr. Excel’s coffin.”  He didn’t think my remark very funny.

So no wonder the first barbarian who looks like he might excite females appears outside all day and I’m about to slobber.  He probably thinks I’m not much .  Boys in school thought I was too small.  I am short — who knows what he thinks.

So when I delivered Sam’s unsigned note he sneered at the note and maybe me.  Called me a ‘bitch’.  I guess slavesellers think of women like that.  The 2nd day he had his woman with him and she was magnificent and bald.  I couldn’t decide if she was his slave or something else.  Most any woman would end up subservient to a man like that.  If I had to be a slave I would hope for someone similar to him.

He kept the note and wants 120 credits, or else.  Sam wants to have someone to kill him, it might cost 50 credits he thinks.  Father and Ken want to pay the money because he might even attack, “One of the women.”

The next day, or the third day of the merchants operation on our corner there is a new development.  Somehow he has taken over the upstairs apartment almost above our store.  Funny thing I’m the woman who is to take the envelope to him that morning.  It was an erotic scene on the street then.  He and the bald-headed girl were displaying a large group of white and brown naked girls to customers.  I was left standing there with my stuffed envelope.  I’ve had valuable gems in my care before on the street, but never that much money.  It came to my mind that really my family were serfs to this man by giving in to him like this.  Of course this was just the beginning,  he would want more money and then maybe my sisters and I.  Maybe my brother was right, maybe he should be shot.  He would slap the ass cheeks of a naked girl and I heard him say to a customer, “Prime entertainment!  And today only 15 credits for constant fun!  It’s a steal!”

The man was fumbling in his pockets for the cash.  Finally the merchant saw me and said, “Well little one that envelope must be my payment.  So now, if all the money is in here, I won’t have to kill your brother Sam.”  He took the envelope.  and said to a customer, “Yeah buddy she’s all available for twelve, if you can wait till you get home to do her?”

The customer was a big red-headed beast of a man, and looked like he was about to rape the girl right on the street using his fingers!  The merchant turned away from me and said directly to the man, “

“Look mister twelve buys her, but she’s twenty of you have any more fun here.  Pay and take her home, or at least down the street a block!”  He took the man’s money, and then turned around to me and said, “Actually little lady tell your brother he makes me nervous and everything is OK between your family and me now as long as the men don’t walk over here near me and that Sam doesn’t even work in your store or come to your store anymore.  As far as you women go I live right upstairs now and you and your sisters would be good entertainment for me.  I’ve seen you watching me.  You want me don’t you?”

I don’t know why I said it — animal magnetism or what but I said, “Yes.”

“Good then it’s settled.  You can keep working at the jewelery store during the day, but nights you will stay in my apartment.  Don’t worry my other woman won’t hurt you.  Her name is Dorothy and I own her like I now own you, right?”

“Yes,”  I said again.

“Tell your brothers and uncles that I wanted you instead of more money, right now.”  He flipped through the  notes in the envelope.  Then he said, “Tell them you’re saving them lots of money.”

I went back to the jewelery store and told them exactly what he said and my brother Sam left the shop, and I was so excited.  I couldn’t really work, or think about my word.  He had said he owned me, and I had agreed.  My family had agreed.  I was to go to his apartment.  I went there at closing time, and his girl Dorothy let me in downstairs.  She said, hugging me, “I’m really glad to meet you.”
